The Toshiba Satellite L650-1DG PSK1EE is a smart-looking but somewhat generic mid-range laptop. Like the Medion Akoya P6625, it’s a slab of blackness, with a glossy display and subtle patterning.
The Toshiba Satellite L650-1DG PSK1EE laptop’s multitouch trackpad is almost invisible, but its rough texture allows your fingertips to feel where it begins and ends. Below are two large physical buttons for clicking left and right.
Compared to the Akoya, Toshiba has done a good job with the Satellite L650-1DG PSK1EE’s keyboard. Although the laptop itself is no wider, the keys spread out further towards the edges of the case, allowing room for a full numberpad with large plus and minus buttons down the side.
Connectivity options include VGA, HDMI and three USB 2.0 ports, one of which doubles up for eSATA. The Toshiba Satellite L650-1DG PSK1EE laptop’s multiformat card reader, webcam and ExpressCard slot are other welcome additions.
Priced at £599, it’s a little more expensive than the Medion, but the Toshiba Satellite L650-1DG PSK1EE’s 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-450M is a tiny bit faster than the 2.26GHz i5-430M found in the Medion. The Toshiba failed to capitalise on this advantage, however, only matching the Medion’s 106-point WorldBench performance. The laptop also comes with a stingy 320GB hard drive and only 3GB of memory.
The Toshiba Satellite L650-1DG PSK1EE also lacks a discrete graphics processing unit, instead relying on the Core i5’s integrated graphics. This is more than enough for work and multimedia, but not for gaming: framerates of 14fps in Fear and 5.5fps in Stalker: Call of Pripyat really aren’t fun.
While toshiba laptop battery life is a lot better than some, the 48Wh lithium-ion model used here is less capacious than those of the more expensive laptops. The Toshiba Satellite L650-1DG PSK1EE lasted a little under five hours in our tests.

Finding your laptop Brand & Model
Your owner’s manual should have the brand and model on the front cover. If you don’t have your owner’s manual then almost every laptop has a manufacturer’s label on the bottom of the computer. This label should have the brand and model number on it.
Once you have the Brand and model of your laptop, use the Search Wizard to select your Brand and Model. Once this is done it will display the compatible Battery and AC Adapter under the Product column.
For Windows 98 – Vista Only
If all else fails, turn on your computer and follow these instructions:
1. Go to your desktop.
2. Click ‘Start’ on the bottom left of the screen.
3. Mouse over ‘Programs’ > ‘Accessories’ > ‘System Tools’
4. Click on ‘System Information’.
5. Your computer’s manufacturer, model, etc. will be listed on the following page.
Selecting the correct AC Adapter
Before purchasing an AC Adapter you need to make sure make the AC Adapter will give you the correct voltage and suitable current output.
To find out the voltage & current, turn your laptop over and look for a label, sticker or writing which shows the voltage and current, it should look something like the examples below. The voltage figure will have a “V” after the number i.e 19V and the current will have a “A” or “mA”. i.e 3.15A. You can also find these shown on your original AC adapter if you have it. The Voltage must be within 10% of your original AC Adapters Voltage. The Amps may be higher but they cannot by lower.
If you are purchasing a universal AC Adapter or Car Charger you will need to work out the Watts of your original AC Adapter and select the universal AC Adapter or Car Charger with the same Watts or next highest Wattage. You can work out the Wattage by multiplying the Voltage by the Amps i.e 20V X 3A = 60 Watts. There is no 60 Watt AC Adapter so you will need to select the next step up which is the 70 Watt AC Adapter.
PLEASE NOTE: If the wattage requirement for your laptop is lower than the 60W or 90W output of the adapter, it will not damage your laptop, your laptop will only take the amount of power it requires. I.E. If your laptop needs 45W, then either the 60W or 90W will work OK. If your laptop needs 80W then you will need the 90W one as the 75W one will not be powerful enough.
